DIVERSION
Dir: Sam Atkin
Kingston University
DIVERSION is the tale of an overworked postman, stuck in his routine and struggling to cope. However, when he is diverted from his usual round, he experiences some eye-opening consequences.
My final year project was drawn from my personal experience of working as a postman the previous summer. After graduating earlier this year from my BA (HONS) Degree in Animation my aspirations are to try and gain some experience within the animation industry: I have begun this by working as an assistant at Picasso Pictures in London.
ZABBALEEN; THE RUBBISH COLLECTORS OF CAIRO
Dir: Louise Palmer
Bournemouth University
Crew: Matt Hopkins, Emily Rudge, Salah Nass, Crystal Hadcroft
On the outskirts of Cairo are seven large rubbish pits. Here the Zabbaleen, or rubbish collectors, gather and sort the city’s waste. By recycling 80% of it they make what little money they can. This is the story of one of the many Zabbaleen called Milad.
I had always wanted to produce a documentary for my university degree film, and had hoped to shoot abroad. Filming abroad gave me many challenges, and it took a lot of perseverance to overcome them.
A SECOND LOOK
Dir: Helen Schroeder
Norwich School of Art and design
Titus Tucker, is an old watchmaker who is completely absorbed in his work and habits. Over the years, he has become so accustomed to looking through his monocular that his right eye is permanently closed. During the course of three days, Titus Tucker is snapped out of his clockwork routine and forced to acknowledge the outside world in the shape of an intrusive peddler. The encounter opens his eyes for a moment, and though he turns his back on her, something has changed.
Timing is so integral to animation that the watchmaker was an almost obvious choice of theme. On a personal level, it represents the tension between creative chaos and dogged routine which are relevant to my artistic practice as an animator. At the moment, my main ambition is to become a better animator by working at stop motion studios. In the long term, my dream would be to make a living as animation director and filmmaker.
72 HOURS FROM NOW
Dir: David Procter and Peter King
Hull School of Art & Design
Crew: Andrea Farrena, Alban Thomson.
Cast: Danielle Rhodes, Harry Dyer.
A girl wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world…
Written and produced under impossible time restraints, 72 HOURS FROM NOW parodies a well-known film to produce a concise narrative which plays with audience perception. This is the first collaboration between directors David Procter and Peter King along with producer, Andrea Farrena. They have recently founded their own production company, Agenda Collective, and hope to commission music videos, commercials and films in the future.
PAST AND FUTURE SELF
Dir. Austin Houldsworth
Manchester Metropolitan University
Exploring the parallels between human development and an expanding/ contracting universe…
The director filmed the video in his garage, which probably wasn’t the best location, as the resulting explosion broke a three metre fluorescent light fitting….
JUST WAITING
Dir: Hamy Ramezan
University for the Creative Arts
Crew: Orpheus Reineke, Edwards Hobson, Matthew King, Bryce Dunn, James Jonathan Lee.
Cast: Puyan Heydari, Lukien Morgan, Malcom Sumeton, Ilya Bakelteev, Polina Savnkova.
JUST WAITING is the story of an Iranian boy in a Yugoslavian detention centre. His dreams and wishes remain inside the camp until his childish perception of reality and justice come to an abrupt end…
Made through an autobiographical process, JUST WAITING challenges the theme of childhood. The director is currently looking to do a feature film.
COMPANION
Dir: Daniel Royle
University of Lincoln
Crew: Mat Rogers, Nick Tomlinson
Cast: Kim Bevan
A discovery in a disused basement room provides a source of inspiration for a lonely inhabitant.
The film began as a small sketch of an animation armature sitting in a corner feeling lonely. It grew from there and after several re-writes took shape as it is now. The film was made in my final year of university: it was a labour of love and with the main set standing at nearly fourteen feet high it swiftly became a big production!
I HAVE DODGED THROUGH PARKING LOTS…
Dir: Hannah Ellul
University of Brighton
This video is a collaboration, with text and visual montage by Hannah Ellul and music by Jack Allet. Both sound and images were undertaken as reciprocal elements, tied together by a narrative. The rhythm pulls the viewer through the piece in a way that parallels the theme – the weariness of endless travelling.
I am currently studying for a BA in critical Fine Art Practice at the University of Brighton. I am particularly interested in the exploration of sound, how it affects our (visual) perception. In the long-term, I intend to pursue my interests at postgraduate level.
IF I WAS A SUPERHERO
Dir: Junior Jesman
University of Hertfordshire
Crew: Junior Jesman, Modeller Rigeler
Cast: Tim Harrington, Daniel Mgwira
The film addresses every child’s dream: what if I was a superhero? What kind of good dead or mayhem could I cause?
The idea for the film came about after watching Aardman Creature Comforts: I interviewed some kids to see what kind of things they’d do if they were superheroes. Rather than recreate Creature Comforts, I turned all the children’s ideas as well as my own ideas into a script. Making this film has really helped me improve my animation skills.
GOTTO WEE
Dir: Archie Leigh-Jones
Rudheath Community High School
The words of Dear Eskiimo’s “Gotto Wee” were the inspiration for this music video which was originally made for Cornerhouse’s, Three Week Easter Challenge.
After spending most of Easter holiday making this film (!!) I have no more plans for a music video but want to make short experimental films.
GRANDMA AND THE MONSTER
Dir: Debbie Steer
Manchester Metropolitan University
Crew: Debbie Steer, Jonathan Addy, Lucy Elliott, Joe Mannion, Michael Jump, Paddy Steer, Bernie Steer, Louisa Birkin, Kathryn Tallis, Kelly Palin, Ivana Petrovic, Graeme Cole, Martin Corbett, John T Addy.
Cast: Liz Lees, Stuart Rooker, Laura Drummond
Shot on Super 8mm, GRANDMA AND THE MONSTER is an exploration of our preconceptions of the elderly.
The filmmakers, although accomplished in digital film-making, restricted themselves by going back to time-honoured techniques. Utilising stop-motion animation and a rear-projection screen, they placed live actors into an animated world. As the premise of the film is about the rampant destruction of an environment, the film was made using only recycled or used materials. This film is a third year final piece by Lucy, Debbie and Jonathan who attended the BA Hons Contemporary Film and Video at Manchester Metropolitan University.
THE GRAB
Dirs: Joe Barcham and Kelly Holmes
University of Derby
Crew: Joe Barcham, Kelly Holmes, Owen Tooth
Cast: Jon Glentoran, Airon Bunning, Ali Powers
A man. A house. A bed. All he wanted to do is get some sleep…
Made on 16mm, THE GRAB creates a shocking horror, influenced by Japanese and Italian horror films. Joe Barcham is currently producing a psychological horror feature to continue his catalogue of short films.
STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS
Dir: Leo Bridle
Winchester School of Art
Cast: Tom Fitton, Su Eaton, Joel Wyllie, Vic Anderson, Leo Powell
STILL LIFE, WITH FLOWERS is a trans-global tale of desert island castaways, giant flowers and baked bean tins. It mixes colourful stop motion animation with live action footage and CGI elements, to tell the story of a solitary man who accidentally unleashes a blossoming of life.
The film took about two months to design and shoot, with another month spent putting everything together in After Effects. The music is by Portico Quartet, who can regularly be seen busking on the South Bank in London.
I have just started the animation degree at Bournemouth Arts Institute. In the future I would like to work in a team as a director in film or animation.
ORDINARY MAN (Music Video)
Dir. Paul Adshead
Musician: Jim Noir
Cast: Andy Sidorczuk
This music video stars a ventriloquist dummy made especially for the project to resemble Jim Noir by an Argentinean puppet maker.
During filming, director Paul Adshead found that “working with a ventriloquist doll in some respects was quite good. He would work long hours, was always on time and he never complained.”
GONE IN 60 SECONDS
Dir. Tom Bamber
Runshaw College
A quirky take on cake baking using stop-motion animation and fair-trade ingredients…
Using digital stills and a lot of patience, it took director Tom Bamber a weekend to film his cake baking. He is currently studying for a National Diploma in Media Moving Image at Runshaw College and is looking to study for a BA Hons in Television and Film Production.
CHASING BEV
Dir: Vanessa Stockley
National Film and Television School
Two years ago Bev discovered autograph collecting. This film explores how her new hobby has changed her life and given her something to live for.
This film was the first time I picked up a camera, and I shot and edited alone. I would like to carry on making observational documentaries and am currently working on a 3 minute wonder series of Channel 4.
